Reforestation in Ladakh, India
Climate Keepers is beginning a reforestation project in Ladakh, India under the direction of our colleague Dr. Bornali Dowerah who is based in Assam. The Ladakh Reforestation Project is a Climate Keepers initiative to reforest major portions of high altitude biomes in Ladakh. We have identified a promising test site and established partnerships with the Indian Army command in the region and with Ladakh Environment and Health Organization (LEHO). In spring of 2024 we will plant 36 different species of high altitude tolerant trees and shrubs in a 50 x 50 meter test plot in central Ladakh. The initial two years will serve as a test of the best species of plants to use in the area and a test of local engagement necessary to care for plantings through early stages of growth.
